California Fixes Sliding Road Using 133,000 Recycled Tyres
Mendocino County in California rebuilt 160 feet of sliding Marina Drive in 2007 using 133,000 discarded tyres. The county used a lightweight material made from them, called tire-derived aggregate, for road construction. The lighter repair saved the county about $740,000 in costs.
Context
Context: Old tyres are hard to dispose of, so reusing them in roads and fill is one way to cut waste. Lighter fill material is often chosen where the ground is unstable and may slide.
