Sikkim proposes a Himalayan Pole named after the yak
Sikkim's first Himalayan Yak Festival has renewed calls for yak conservation. Yak Federation of India executive member Thupden Lachungpa proposed a 'Himalayan Pole' or 'Yak Pole' to highlight the animal's importance to the region. The festival was held in Gnathang Valley near the India-China border. The proposal is meant to draw attention to the animal.
ContextContext: Yaks are hardy animals that live at high altitudes and support many Himalayan communities. The North and South Poles are the two well-known Earth poles, so a third pole named after an animal would be an unusual idea.
