Telangana Faces Cost Crunch on Farmer Payments
Telangana's government faces a large financial burden in funding Rythu Bharosa, a support payment to farmers. It is deciding how to compensate farmers who were asked not to take up Rabi cultivation because of El Nino. The date for the next instalment usually comes before December ends, but this year depends on the compensation plan.
Context
Rythu Bharosa is Telangana's scheme that gives farmers money for each season; Rabi is the winter sowing season. El Nino is a climate pattern linked to weaker rains in India, which is why the state asked farmers to skip sowing.
