Voter ID May Replace Aadhaar for Welfare Payments
Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh said welfare payments would rely on biometrics and voter ID numbers instead of Aadhaar. Congress leader Pawan Khera and the CPI(M) warned the change could cut off people removed from electoral rolls and create hurdles for rural residents.
Context
Aadhaar is the 12-digit ID used for many government subsidies and payments. The SIR is the Election Commission's special revision of voter lists, so the debate links welfare access to whether a person is on the rolls.
