NASA's Lucy Reaches Jupiter's Trojan Asteroid Region
NASA said on October 28, 2026 that its Lucy spacecraft had entered the Jupiter Trojan region, five years after launch. The mission has travelled more than 2.2 billion miles, and it is described as the first spacecraft to reach this area.
Context
Lucy launched in 2021 to study Jupiter's Trojan asteroids, groups of rocky bodies that share the giant planet's orbit. Scientists think these asteroids may be leftovers from the early solar system, which helps explain how the planets formed.
