Delhi NCR Air Enters Serious Emergency Before Diwali
Air quality in Delhi and the wider NCR has reached a serious emergency level before Diwali, with the Air Quality Index crossing 400. The reading falls in the very poor range, a level that can strain breathing and affect people with asthma or heart conditions most.
Context
Delhi's air often turns severe each winter, when smoke from crop burning in nearby states, vehicle exhaust and dust build up in cold, still air. Fireworks during Diwali can add to the smoke around the festival.
