CPI(M) Opposes Biometric and Voter ID Link for Welfare
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has criticised a minister's suggestion to link biometric data and voter ID cards to welfare benefits. It says the idea would hurt the rural poor and wants the government to drop it. The party calls it an exclusionary decision that could leave eligible people without support.
Context
Aadhaar, the 12-digit biometric ID, has been used for direct benefit transfers, and debates over exclusion from welfare have followed for years. Voter ID cards are issued by the Election Commission, so linking them to benefits brings elections and welfare into the same debate.
