NHAI Issues Guidelines for Barrier-Free Toll Collection
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued guidelines to standardise design and infrastructure for multi-lane free flow tolling. The rules aim to make upcoming and ongoing highway projects ready for barrier-free toll collection, so vehicles will not have to stop at toll booths.
Context
Toll plazas are the booths where drivers pay fees on national highways, and FASTag, the electronic tag on windscreens, lets payments happen without cash. Multi-lane free flow (MLFF) uses cameras and sensors to read tags while vehicles drive at speed.
