New Cars and Two-Wheelers Need 4-Layer Motor Cover From Dec 15

India's insurance regulator IRDAI has issued a directive requiring a four-layer motor cover for new private cars and two-wheelers from December 15. The rule follows a Supreme Court order calling for cover for third-party liability, legal liability to occupants, personal accident and own damage. New buyers should ask insurers how each of these four parts is covered.

Context

Context: Third-party cover, which pays for injury or damage a driver causes to others, is compulsory for vehicles in India under the Motor Vehicles Act. Own damage cover, by contrast, pays for repairs to your own vehicle and is usually optional.
