1 Crore Indians at Risk of Diabetic Eye Damage
A new report says over one crore Indians are at risk of diabetic retinopathy, an eye condition linked to diabetes. It found that 84.8% of rural diabetes patients have never been screened for it. The findings point to a gap in eye checks for people living in villages.
Context
Diabetic retinopathy damages the small blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Regular eye screening is the main way to catch it early, and India has a very large diabetic population.
