UN Ends Its Somalia Political Mission After Three Decades
The United Nations has ended its political mission in Somalia after three decades. The mission, called UNSOM, was set up by the Security Council in 2013 to help Somali authorities build democracy and the rule of law after years of conflict involving militias, Islamist groups and criminal gangs.
Context
Somalia's government has faced al-Shabaab, an Islamist militant group, since the early 2000s, and the country's state was largely broken after its civil war began in 1991. The UN mission was one part of international help for rebuilding Somali institutions.
