ONGC Faces ₹36.17 Crore Compensation Demand Over Well Blowout
Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board has asked ONGC to pay ₹36.17 crore in compensation over a blowout at its Mori-5 well in Konaseema district. The blowout, caused by a gas leak, happened on January 5, 2026 at Irusumanda village. The board has also issued a show-cause notice, asking the company to explain its position after starting a probe.
Context
A blowout is an uncontrolled release of oil or gas from a well, and ONGC is India's largest state-owned oil and gas explorer. Pollution boards can seek payment for environmental damage, part of a wider push to make firms answer for industrial accidents.
