Cyber-Attacks Hit Supermarket Freezers in Nine Countries
Supermarkets in nine European countries reported problems with their freezers after cyber-attacks, from Estonia and Sweden to Portugal and Italy. Many retailers were forced to throw away food. The disruption reached shops across the continent, from the Baltic states to southern Europe.
Context
Supermarkets rely on networked controls for things like freezer temperatures, so a cyber-attack can disrupt cold storage without any physical break-in. Food that is not kept at safe temperatures often has to be discarded.
