Power Lines Behind Many Chittoor Elephant Deaths
Electrocution is linked to 32 of the 49 elephant deaths recorded in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, since 2015. Collector Sumit Kumar has ordered 150 high-risk spots with low-hanging power lines to be fixed within a month. The order is aimed at reducing these electrocution deaths in the area.
Context
Chittoor sits in a region where elephants move through areas used by people, so overhead wires can become a danger. India runs Project Elephant, a central scheme that helps states protect elephants and their habitats.
