India Plans Mandatory Energy Storage for State Utilities
The Union Cabinet approved a ₹14,500 crore Viability Gap Funding scheme for 92 GWh of grid-scale energy storage. India will also require state utilities to add energy storage capacity. Storage lets power generated at one time be used later, helping keep the grid steady and supporting power supply when demand is high.
Context
Solar and wind power generate electricity only when the sun shines or the wind blows, so storage is needed to use it at other times. Grid-scale storage means large battery or similar systems connected to the main power network.
